Our Traceability: The Story Behind Every Stone
At KVGemsCo, we believe a gemstone’s true beauty lies not just in how it looks, but in where it comes from and how it came to be. Traceability has become an essential part of conscious sourcing, and we’re proud to offer transparency around the origin and journey of our gems. While the path from mine to market isn’t always linear, we do our best to honour it and to pass that knowledge on to you.
What Traceability Means to Us
In the world of gemstones, traceability refers to how much of a gem’s journey can be verified — from the mine where it was unearthed to the hands that cut and shaped it, and eventually to you.
To us, traceability is more than just data. It’s about relationships, ethics, and respect for the earth and for every person along the way.
Levels of Traceability
Not all gemstones come with the same level of documentation. We classify our stones into three levels based on how much we know about their journey:
1. Fully Traceable
We know the country or region of origin, often down to the specific mine. We also know who cut and handled the stone. These gems come through direct, trusted relationships with partners at the source.
2. Regionally Traceable
We can trace the gem back to a specific country or locality, and may know parts of its journey, such as who sourced or cut it, but not the entire chain of custody.
3. Untraceable or Legacy Stones
Often older stock or vintage gems that have passed through many hands. While we may not have documentation, we choose them with care for their beauty and uniqueness. We’ll always be transparent about what we do and don’t know.
Why It Matters
Traceability isn’t just about knowing where a gem comes from. It’s about accountability. It supports fairer labour practices, more ethical mining, and reduced environmental impact.
For us, it’s a way of honouring the story behind each stone and making sure that story is told with care and integrity.
Our Ongoing Promise
We’re a small, independent company with deep roots in the world of coloured gems. Over the years, we’ve built close relationships with miners, cutters, and suppliers who share our values.
While not every gem can be fully traced, we will always tell you what we know and never more than that. As the industry evolves, we’ll keep evolving too — committed to greater transparency and ever more responsible sourcing.
